Where can an undesired or unwanted pregnancy be terminated?

It is important to know that an undesired or unwanted pregnancy can be terminated only at government hospitals or private medical centres approved/registered by the Government of Delhi. Heptacare Health is an approved medical centre in South Delhi by the Government of NCT of Delhi for conducting abortions/MTP.

It is further important to note that no abortions/MTPs can be performed at unapproved places. If any abortion (medical or surgical) is carried out at an unapproved facility or medical centre by any doctor or owner, it is considered a criminal act under the MTP Act, which may lead to 5 years of imprisonment for the doctor and the owner of the unapproved facility.

How is Surgical Abortion performed at Heptacare Health?

Heptacare Health has an expert team of doctors, technicians, and nursing staff to care for patients before and after the procedure. We conduct ultrasound-guided procedures to ensure no clots or tissue remains in the uterus. All procedures are performed under sterile, aseptic conditions in a state-of-the-art Modular Operation Theatre, which is equipped with a centralized oxygen pipeline and the latest surgical instruments and equipment. The entire procedure is typically completed within five to ten minutes, with no pain caused to the patient.

What are the prerequisites for patients before surgical abortion?

The following pre-requisites must be fulfilled:

  • Ultrasound of the pelvis to assess the maturity of the pregnancy and rule out ectopic pregnancy.

  • Routine blood tests like CBC, Blood Group, HIV, HBsAg, etc.

  • Past medical history, including any ongoing medication or diseases.

  • Written consent of the patient on Form C.

  • The patient must be empty stomach/NBM (no food or water) for at least 4 hours before the procedure.

How much time does the entire surgical abortion process take?

The experienced team at Heptacare Health completes the surgical procedure in just 2-4 hours. However, the patient must arrive at the centre with an empty stomach at least two hours before the procedure to receive necessary medications and IV fluids. After the procedure, the patient remains under observation for approximately one more hour while her clinical parameters are monitored by the nursing staff. After the procedure, water, juice, and light snacks are provided to help stabilize and comfort the patient. Overall, the entire process takes around 4 hours, depending on the patient’s health.

Are there any complications with future pregnancies?

No, there are no complications in conceiving after the surgical abortion. Normal menstruation resumes within 4 to 6 weeks, and ovulation can occur soon after an abortion, which means pregnancy can happen shortly after the procedure. However, it is strongly advised to avoid any sexual activity for at least 15 days following the surgical abortion to ensure complete recovery.
