What is Ear Infection?

Ear infection refers to the inflammation of the outer, middle, or inner ear. It is generally divided into three types- Otitis media, Otitis interna, and Otitis externa. Children are more likely to get infections in the ear. Usually, ear infections can be treated with antibiotics and conservative therapies. But, when the infections become chronic, they can cause hearing problems and serious complications and may require surgical intervention.

Bacteria or viruses are the main cause of an ear infection. Other leading causes are common colds, flu, or airborne allergies that can cause ear infections.

When is Ear Infection Treatment Required?

Sometimes, ear infections get better on their own and may not require treatment at all. However, ear infections that persist for at least three months or adversely impact daily life may need immediate treatment.

What Happens in Ear Infection Treatment?

Usually, ear infections can fade away on their own. If not, the doctor may recommend antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. When the medications or conservative management doesn’t work, surgery is needed. Here are some surgeries your surgeon may prescribe based on the type and severity of the infection:

Myringoplasty: A graft patch is used to repair the eardrum and prevent infection from entering the ear during this treatment. It is only suggested if there is no infection in the mastoid bone.

Bilateral myringotomy and tubes: To allow fluid to drain out, a tiny tube is implanted within the eardrum.

Tympanoplasty: It minimizes the chance of hearing loss and prevents ear infections. During this procedure, the eardrum is fixed using tissue (fascia) taken from underneath the skin. In exceptional cases, cartilage is used to strengthen the eardrum.

Mastoidectomy: A mastoid bone or middle ear is cleaned during this procedure.

Canal wall down mastoidectomy: This treatment is recommended if an ear infection has damaged the ear canal.

Stapedectomy: This treatment is advised to treat middle ear damage carried on by otosclerosis and to restore hearing ability.

How to Prepare for Ear Infection Surgical Treatment?

Here are some instructions to be prepared for the ear infection treatment:

  • Avoid non-steroid or anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, or herbal supplements two weeks before the surgery.
  • Quit smoking or consuming tobacco before the surgery. These practices may lead to scarring, which hinders recovery after the surgery.
  • Protect yourself from sun damage and wear an SPF 30.
  • Stock up on necessary items after the surgery, such as ointments, hair bands, soft pillows, etc.
  • Do not eat anything the night before your surgery.
  • You can’t walk or drive home alone after the surgery. So, arrange for someone to be with you in the clinic and drop you at home.
  • Don’t wear earrings or studs on the day of surgery.

How to Recover After Ear Infection Surgical Treatment?

If your surgeon has recommended ear infection surgery, you may receive some instructions to speed up your recovery after the procedure. Here are some post-surgical tips to ensure that you heal quickly and correctly.

  • Keep your head elevated with two to three pillows. Lying straight can lead to swelling on your face and around your ears.
  • Keep your dressing dry while washing your face or taking a shower.
  • Maintain hygiene and change dressings regularly. In case you experience excessive bloody discharge, consult your doctor without delay.
  • After removing the dressing, apply antibiotic ointment regularly as directed by your doctor.
  • Be careful while brushing your hair.
  • Avoid wearing goggles for up to 2 or 3 weeks after the surgery.
  • Avoid strenuous or extreme physical activities such as heavy weight lifting, stretching exercises, boxing, etc. Start with light walking and gradually increase the exercises after three or four weeks after the surgery.
  • Only take medications prescribed by your doctor.
  • Avoid caffeine and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Risks And Complications Associated With Ear Infection Treatment

Ear infection surgeries are very safe and effective procedures. Still, some risks and associated complications are mentioned below.

  • They can cause damage to your facial nerve or the nerve controlling your sensation of taste, as well as damage to the bones in your middle ear, resulting in hearing loss and dizziness.
  • Incomplete healing of your eardrum hole.
  • Cholesteatoma is an abnormal skin growth behind your eardrum that causes moderate to severe hearing loss.
